On August 8, 2023 the island of Maui was devastated by wildfires in and around Lahaina (west side) and Kula (upcountry). More than 2,200 homes, apartment buildings and other structures were damages or destroyed, and over 2,170 acres were burned. In addition to property damage at least 102 lives were lost and at 5,000 residents, many of them multi-generational families, were displaced forcing many of them to leave the island entirely.
Since the fires Emmanuel Lutheran Church and School of Maui continues to be at the forefront with relief for those who were impacted by the fires. This included immediate needs (water, food, gift cards, tuition aid for families of school age kids, spiritual needs, etc.) and now long term needs to helps families and individuals recover and move back home to Lahaina.
Now that the needs have changed from immediate needs to long term recovery Emmanuel has partnered with Hoʻōla iā Mauiakama Disaster Long Term Recovery Group (Hoʻōla LTRG)(https://www.mauilongtermrecovery.org/) to continue to provide care and support.
